7 Points in Favor of Coeducation
Co-education is the integrated education of male and female in the same institution. It is the opposite of single-sex education. In co-education male and female persons get the same environment and opportunities to learn. This system in meant to bring both male and female on a single platform and educate them in a civilized manner. In co-education no distinction is made between students in respect of their genders. The students are equally important to teachers. The main purpose of co-education is to enable male and female to interact with each other and remove the hesitation. They can share their views and discuss various topics in conducive environment. Co-education is favored in western countries where it seems quite successful but still it is not favored in some societies or class of people. I am in favor of co-education, because of the
following reasons:
1) Co-education systems build confidence in male and female. They learn how to interact with each other. During their studies they discuss various topics which remove their reluctance to speak openly. Co-education prepares students so that they can face challenges, which they have to account for in their professional life.
2) Co-education broadens the minds of students by different debates between male and female, because every male or female have their own opinion and ideas. So, listening to those ideas of the same-sex as well as opposite one can grab more awareness.
3) Co-Education is the first step towards making our society more civilized, broad-minded, peaceful and tolerant, because both male and female learns how to behave in front of others. They avoid unethical and immoral conversation, in the presence of their opposite sex either it is male or female. They try to become more civilized to make a good reputation in the class which results in their civilized personality.
4) Co-education system provides education to male as well as female members of our society. Woman is the primary asset of our society. They have many relations associated with women. A child learns his first lesson in the lap of his mother. So, education is very necessary for woman and Co-education also supports women-education.
Here, we can say co-education is after the basic Islamic rule of education. Islam says, “Education is a must for all (either male or female)”. Co-education condemns gender discrimination in education. So co-education treats male and female equally and provides them equal learning opportunities. They can avail these opportunities without hesitation.
5) Today woman is successful in every walk of life. We cannot deny their presence in every field. They are in the field of science, technology, arts and crafts, electronic and print media etc. We need to communicate with them in a proper way. For that purpose Co-education gives us the platform.
6) Co-education sets an example in the society that male and female may be gathered for a noble cause and that is ‘to study’. When they gather for the sake of education they realize that male and female are not merely born for the sake of entertainment and enjoyment. We are no here only to fulfill our sexual desires from each other. We can do a lot of research and development in partnership keeping our physical lust aside. Women and men are equally human, and through training and education together they will only know each other better and thus bring-in more harmony and understanding in the society.
7) In under-developed countries like Pakistan, we can say Co-education may be the solution to close the gap between resources and need (demand-supply). Instead of opening two separate institutes (one only for boys and another one only for girls), an institute having Co-education should be opened, which shall be equipped by modern and extra-ordinary facilities by consolidating the resources of two separate institutes. It can be made possible with the concept of co-education.
